There is a Puritanical belief that we must suffer honorably to get what we want. That we must do a job that we hate to make money. That we have to struggle in relationships to have love. That we need to feel pain in order to justify feeling joy. This is simply NOT TRUE! You can do what you love and make money at it. You can enjoy love without strife and you can be who you want to be without struggle. But you must decide one thing: Are you willing to ALLOW yourself?
Perhaps you feel a sense of yearning, perhaps your intuition is gnawing at you. You know that you would be happy if you became a landscape architect or a sumo wrestler or a father. Whatever your yearning for there is a way to get there. I guarantee you there is a path, it may look rocky to you, it may seem impossible but if you make the choice to follow your deep knowing you will not be misguided.
If you think that you are lost and you have no idea what you want to be when you grow up, I challenge that because I believe you do know. Mary Oliver said it best in her poem Wild Geese “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.”
